I ran a small recording studio for a few years about 15 years ago and have been recording my own projects since. I generally use an old school M-Audio Solaris through an audio interface but wanted a portable solution for voice over work, and possibly some singing, while traveling. I bought both this mic and the Rode NT usb mic at the same time and tested their abilities. With SEVERAL tweaks, I was finally able to get the Rode NT to relatively match the performance of my higher quality studio mic, at least when it came to radio and voice over work. I was UNABLE to ever get the Apogee mic to sound remotely in the same ballpark. It’s just too small to be a serious mic. It couldn’t deliver the low end that the Rode could. Honestly, the apogee mic felt like a toy. Don’t get me wrong, I understand the appeal of lightweight and small, but the technology just hasn’t reached the point where such a small mic can produce decent results. It WAS clear sounding, so if you don’t want a mic to pick up low end, then this might work for you. It just doesn’t work for me, however, since I’m used to studio quality condenser mics capable of giving that stereotypical “movie preview narrator” sound. This mic was more suited for light sounding high frequencies. I’m going to have to return it.

So I have always been a fan of the idea that in the computer age why can’t we have a mic that eliminates the DA converter. I mean signals all go into the computer the same! The difference in price for a mic is the company name, maybe a few tweaks here and there. So my first try at eliminating the old school mic set up was with the YETI PRO. I found out quickly that usb signals cannot travel very far. Also with the yeti that when the ceiling was reached you heard your vocals being squeezed at the top or near the top end. So I scrapped it and waited. So I see this scroll across my feed. I look into it and it pretty much has the same internals as the yeti pro, but again apogee’s teaks here and there could be what I need to break away from the top end vocal squeezeI am highly impressed! This mic competes with my 1000$ mic and it’s plug and play on multiple devices! This review is for in the box studio producers who want to get vocals crisp and clear and have headroom for vocal mix downs! This mic is PERFECT! Easy to use easy to connect and gives you RAW vocal capabilities like your expensive mic without the DA converter. It’s all in one!The positives: EVERYTHING can’t say enoughThe negatives: YOU NEED A LOUD HEADPHONE AMP!! The headphone output is good even when utilizing my MAC audio midi app to increase the volume. But I had an old Mackie BigKnob and just ran the headphone out from the MiC PLUS to it and it’s as loud and clean as ever.If your an artist looking for a nice mic to record without having to build an a tire studio, start here. This is the best USB mic for studio and MAJOR recordingTrust when I tell you that I have a major studio this mic has blown me away

Some other voiceover actors I know recommended this mic, including some instructors at Kalmenson, so I bought it a few months ago to have a small but excellent quality mic for portable use. I use it with my iPhone 5S and my MacBook.Happy!! It’s a great little mic. I have a “deep movie trailer” voice, and this mic is great for that, comparable to my AKG or Schoeps. Today, I used it for a video ecocast on-camera audition shot on iPhone. The mic was clamped to the tripod with the iPhone, and I was 3′-6′ away — the sound was clean and tight, and required nothing in post for cleanup. In fact I was able to send in the audition as recorded on the iPhone & the Apogee mic with no alterations or post fixing whatsoever.Just for the record, I’ve been a sound professional since the early 1980s. I own a dozen mics, including Sennheiser (816 & 416), Schoeps (MK41), AKG, etc. This apogee mic fits in well with them, both in sound and build quality.Apogee mic general notes:Good:1) Heavy for the size, and very solid in construction. Excellent build quality.2) Easy to use with all the USB/Lightning cables you might need.3) Great sound, comparable to other high quality mics.4) Quiet low noise preamp, low self noise, clean output.5) Built in headphone jack allows latency free monitoring.Neither good nor bad:6) The separately available fitted case is a must have, though it does not hold my third party pop screen. It does hold the mic well protected, the mini stand, and the accessory cables.7) Not a fault of the mic – some apps like Audacity you need to make sure the mic is selected, as Audacity does not necessarily use the system selected mic.Weak:8) I wish it had a rolloff filter. I use the mic very close for some things, and I get a little too much bass as a result, as is true of most any cardioid mic.9) The mini mic stand is just wonky, and not a good complement to such a nice mic.10) IMO the mic should come with at least a foam windscreen, but it doesn’t. I use a third party nylon type screen that’s okay. Pop sensitivity is like most medium to large diaphragm mics, so some sort of screen is useful for close mic-ing.11) Package does not come “factory sealed” so you won’t know if it was opened — weird. I know Apogee wants to be “green” and not use unnecessary packaging, but really guys you need to have a tamper-evident seal on the box!In short, I’m really happy to have a mic this good that is plug and play with my iPhone or MacBook. To be honest, even at home I’ll more likely use this with my MacBook for a quick audition than fire up the whole studio.

I purchased this microphone to replace one that fell way below my expectations. The Apogee mic far exceeds my expectations in terms of sound quality, ease of use with my ipad and build quality. No much more to say other than if you are looking for a quality mic in this price point I do not think you will be disappointed.

I was using a yeti blackout mic for my ps4 game/party chat. However, that mic picked up every minor sound regardless of messing around with the gain knobs and eventually the mic didnt turn on after a year. I had issues with the usb cutting/losing connection. I did some research and bought the Apogee mic and combining it with a soundblaster dac/headphone amp it made a huge difference. No mic sensitivity and the build quality is very good as well. Btw to mute the mic you must press the knob in. Took me awhile to figure that out.

The mic+ performs as expected, However the product registration process is impossible to deal with. And Customer service is inflexible regarding their process. I am very happy with the mic, but will not be able to register the product and therefore have no warranty. The reason for the 3 star rating is due to their customer service. The product is good. After third contact with customer service, I was able to get them to take the information in an email and register the product.  I am glad to  have the product registered but still disappointed in all of the headache that was necessary to get the job done.

Apogee is known for making solid products. This latest mic is beautifully made and they provide it with a great little case, with almost everything you’ll need to make great recordings. I use it for voice-over, especially when I need portability. It is one of the few quality condenser mics that can plug directly into the iPad and work without external power. I tried a larger Marshall USB mic and it required a powered camera adapter — that can be a pain, if you’re trying to record where an outlet is not easily available. The mic itself has some nifty features, like the (almost) zero-latency headphone jack with adjustable mix b/w headphones and playback, a fairly easy-to-use gain setting dial, and it’s much-bragged-about built-in compression. That feature is much more important for broadcast/podcast use. For voice-over, many clients want to be able to go back to raw signal and hardware compression means the “original” signal has been messed with on input. But, for a recent promo-style VO, the lowest compression setting worked well for me, and it’s easy enough to turn off.The mic quality itself is really pretty darned good. It’s good enough for professional work. I haven’t compared it to my highest-end mics, but it did the job.One thing it’s missing — that Apogee doesn’t provide with any of its mics — is a shock mount. They provide a tripod with a ball mount (very adjustable and solid), but you can easily get low-end rumble transmitted from mic handling or vibration of a table or floor. I did experiment, and the Rycote InVision USM-L (or USM) can be used, so there is a viable option. But that’s another ~$70. Overall (and because I already have the Rycote), I’ve found it to be a valuable mic to have and I’m glad I bought it. It’s not cheap, but it’s high-quality & sometimes you get what you pay for.

Recently I bought a microphone (Apogee Hype Mic) and the Amazon website did not say that the product already came with its accessories, and influenced me to also buy some accessories separately. That is, I bought twice and spent (plus $ 349 on the microphone) plus $ 31 unnecessarily with the “Apogee MiC Stand Adapter” and “Aokeo Professional Microphone Pop Filter”. Amazon should give me back this money spent unnecessarily.

Fully disclosure. I first purchased the Rode NT-USB condenser Mic and was extremely impressed with the sound quality. However, I had to return it because it had no manual audio gain gauge on it and I discovered that the audio gain would change automatically when recording on Windows 10 and google chrome. So sadly I returned this mic due to that issue and I went with this microphone after reading the reviews. This mic solves the problem of no automatic audio gain as it has a manual knob to control the input sound level. So it solved that problem. Overall, the sound quality is top-notch EXCEPT I have to say I find the dynamic range of the RODE a bit better if I still was able to use it.I’m satisfied with this purchase, but I would invest in a RODE mic if the company would release a USB version with an audio gain control knob that I could control.

Headphone jack not working, now I’m unable to monitor myself when I record. Was working swimmingly prior to the breakdown. Would’ve liked a “0” marker or even just a line on the volume knob so it doesn’t feel so arbitrary spinning the thing around and around.
